Methodology

Farms in the FADN system are selected on the basis of a sampling plan (selection plan) which must ensure the representativeness of agricultural holdings in the FADN sample.

The selection plan contains data on statistical reference sources (Census of Agriculture and Farm Structure Survey), procedures for stratification of FADN survey areas according to regional units, types of agricultural production and economic size classes, procedures for determining the number of farms to be selected for each stratum and their selection.

A representative sample is the number of agricultural holdings in the FADN system which is determined by the statistical method of stratification regarding the distribution of agricultural holdings within the FADN research area into strata. Size of the representative FADN sample in the Republic of Croatia was determined by statistical methods based on the data of the Farm Structure Survey (FSS) conducted by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

Current statistical bases assume a representative FADN sample of 1,251 agricultural holdings.

When collecting data it is necessary to ensure that the selected FADN sample of agricultural holdings reflects the diversity of production in a particular area. Therefore, the FADN population is defined according to three criteria – economic size, type of agricultural production and regional affiliation.

Economic size is the value of the potential income that an economy could generate on the basis of its agricultural production in one year. It is calculated using a calculator available on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries website.

Standard Output (SO) is the monetary value of agricultural production expressed in producer prices at the holdings doorstep. In crop production SO refers to one hectare (exceptions apply to mushrooms, expressed in monetary value per 100 m2, and in livestock production refers to livestock, 100 poultry beaks or bee community. SO is expressed in national currency and in euros.

Depending on the total value of the holding’s production expressed in euros, they are divided into classes of economic size:

Economic size classes Lower limits of the economic size classes (in euro) Upper limits of the economic size classes (in euro)
