Farms are selected for the FSDN system on the basis of a selection plan, which must ensure the representativeness of the holdings included in the FSDN sample.
The selection plan includes:
information on statistical reference sources (Agricultural Census, Farm Structure Survey),
procedures for stratifying the FSDN survey area according to regional units, types of farming, and economic size classes,
procedures for determining the number of holdings to be selected in each stratum and the methodology for their selection.
A representative sample is defined as the number of agricultural holdings in the FSDN system determined by the statistical method of stratification, i.e. the allocation of holdings into layers (strata). The size of the representative FSDN sample in the Republic of Croatia is determined using statistical methods based on data from the Farm Structure Survey (FSS). Current statistical bases assume a representative FSDN sample of 1,251 agricultural holdings (Continental Croatia – 922, Adriatic Croatia – 329).
During data collection, it is necessary to ensure that the selected FSDN sample reflects the diversity of production in each area. Therefore, the FSDN population is defined according to three criteria:
economic size,
type of farming,
regional affiliation.
Economic size represents the value of the potential income that a holding can generate in one year based on its production. It is calculated using a calculator available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Standard Output (SO) denotes the unit monetary value of an agricultural product expressed in producer prices “at the farm gate”.
In crop production, SO refers to one hectare (except for mushrooms, which are expressed per 100 m²).
In livestock production, it refers to one head of livestock, 100 head of poultry, or one bee colony.
SO is expressed in euros.
The total SO of a holding is calculated as the sum of individual production units multiplied by the corresponding standard output coefficient.
Depending on the total value of production expressed in euros, holdings are classified into the appropriate economic size classes:
| Economic size classes | Lower limits of the economic size classes (in euro) | Upper limits of the economic size classes (in euro) |
|---|---|---|
| I | 2,000 | |
| II | 2,000 | 4,000 |
| III | 4,000 | 8,000 |
| IV | 8,000 | 15,000 |
| V | 15,000 | 25,000 |
| VI | 25,000 | 50,000 |
| VII | 50,000 | 100,000 |
| VII | 100,000 | 250,000 |
| IX | 250,000 | 500,000 |
| X | 500,000 | 750,000 |
| XI | 750,000 | 1,000,000 |
| XII | 1,000,000 | 1,500,000 |
| XIII | 1,500,000 | 3,000,000 |
| XIV | 3,000,000 |
